Midway along the eastern coast of Brazil, in the state of Bahia, is the tiny coastal village of Caraíva. Until recently, it was a village without electricity, banks or even decent telephone lines, however nowadays things are changing. Daniel Vangarde, a French songwriter and producer (The Gibson Brothers, Ottowan and La Compagnie Créole) living in Caraíva, is currently developing a NGO community website for the village and its people.
Connaxis started with the Caraíva Viva logo. Daniel produced a track with music from a Brazilian band and needed the logo for the cover of the CD.
The lives of the 600 inhabitants of Caraíva depend mostly on fishery and tourism. Daniel aims to bring the convenience of modern technology to the village, whilst preserving their unique way of life. His efforts have so far succeeded in having the Brazilian government implement an underground grid to power the village, and his next plan involves bringing the internet to every home as well as projects to improve education, health care and local utilities.
Daniel asked Connaxis to develop a community website on which every villager can maintain a blog and post notices on the bulletin board. Additionally, we created pages where visitors can find information on the projects lead by Daniel and also sponsorship and volunteering opportunities. After contributing, donators can then follow their project online and connect with the people of the village.
It was essential to Daniel that the site be highly visual and so Caraíva Viva is brought to life by the sounds and images that reflect the vibrancy of the village. Daniel requested functionality to enable every villager to upload their own videos and photos to share with the world. Using CakePHP we were able to develop a simple platform that is easy to use yet beautifully engaging. This website is a means of improving the quality of living for the people of Caraíva without jeopordising their unique culture or damaging the surrounding environment. Connaxis is honoured to be a part of this wonderful project.
